Back to School & Corporate Wellness Programs

What do these two have in common?  Well, Let's Move has released a plan of action for school's to become a healthier place.  It's a five step plan and step three mentions "set a good example.  Make your school a healthy workplace."  Coincidentally, I received an email from our industry institute about corporate wellness programs and how they are saving business's money on health care costs.  Schools can lead by example AND save money.   It's stated that for every $1 invested into a wellness program, $3 in health care costs is saved.  As an example, Johnson & Johnson saved between $9-10 million in health care costs last year due to their corporate wellness program.  There are plenty more examples (just ask if you want to know more) but we figured that's drastic enough.  Call us (888.996.8002 ext 105) or browse our website for products to jump start your corporate wellness program.  We've also included three items that would be great as a kick-off item.

Medicine Made Easy

September is National Preparedness Month

Do you know what a zombie apocalypse is?  Are you prepared for one?  Well if you're not, rest assured that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is!  It sounds a little far-fetched...but the point is, we need to be prepared for anything, even zombies.

Over the past 10 years we have seen so many disaster's and emergencies happen in the U.S alone; Hurricane Katrina, the recent tornadoes in the South, the New England ice storm of 2008-which in fact I was caught in.  Yes, we can watch on the news how awful these disasters are, but at least for me, you really don't understand until something happens to YOU.  I remember it clear as day-the news warning us that it was coming.  But us northerners have dealt with snow and ice our WHOLE lives so what was another storm?  Well, it hit, and of course we, personally, didn't prepare (maybe if I saw the zombie apocalypse article first I would have prepared myself).  We thought as usual the state workers would handle it and it would be all good.  Yeah, those thoughts went away when we were sitting without power and heat (our heat is electric).  We had one lantern, and every store was sold out of generators.  It became later in the night and what more could we do but go to sleep.  I slept in a long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt, and about seven blankets on top of me.  The next morning we all woke up and had enough.  We decided to go to hotel.  So, we packed and jumped in the car and went to the closest hotel.  Well, guess what?  Every hotel was SOLD OUT!  We eventually found a hotel 15 miles from my house that had one room left.  We stayed there for the night and most of the next day until our power finally came on.  We were one of the lucky ones since 100,000 people were still without power a week later. 

Needless to say, this experience opened my eyes to disaster's and emergencies.  An ice storm doesn't compare to a hurricane, tornado, or a zombie apocalypse but it still was scary and I wasn't prepared at all.  Here's an article about Emergency and Preparedness Response and about zombie apocalypse's so if you don't know about them you can learn!  Also, below there's three great products to make sure you're prepared when and if a disaster, emergency, or zombie apocalypse hits.

and the weather man says it's going to stay that way through the weekend.  We all want to reach in the freezer and pull out a frozen treat to snack on...unfortunately most frozen treats aren't very healthy.  Try this homemade popsicle from EatingWell.com

I've tried it and it's SO delicious and only has 29 calories!

"

3 3/4 cups chopped seedless watermelon

2 tablespoons lime juice

1-2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup fresh blueberries

Puree watermelon, lime juice and sugar to taste in a food processor or blender until smooth.

Divide blueberries among freezer-pop molds. Top with the watermelon mixture. Insert the sticks and freeze until completely firm, about 6 hours. Dip the molds briefly in hot water before unmolding."

Since summer has begun we are seeing more flashing blue lights, orange cones, construction workers, and unfortunately more traffic as road workers try to get road maintenance done by the end of the short summer.  On my commute alone there are three construction zones on the highway that I pass.  In 2010 there were 328.9 million street, highway, and bridge construction employees.  That is an immense amount of people to have on the roadways.
